Ruby (Manik) — Loose Gemstone

Ruby is red corundum, coloured by chromium and rated 9 on the Mohs scale. The finest rubies show a pure, glowing red sometimes described as "pigeon's blood." Myanmar (Burma) is the classic source, with important deposits in Mozambique, Thailand and Sri Lanka.

Tradition and meaning

Manik is the ratna of Surya, associated in Jyotish with vitality, confidence, leadership and one's father. It is traditionally set in gold or copper and worn on the ring finger, first put on on a Sunday morning, usually after consultation with an astrologer.

How to choose

Colour is the most important factor, followed by clarity and cut. Heating is common, but lead-glass-filled "composite" rubies are a very different product and must be clearly disclosed. Always ask for a gemological report that matches the exact stone.

Care

Clean with mild soapy water and a soft brush. Avoid ultrasonic cleaning, heat and acids, especially for any stone with fillings or fractures.

What we confirm before you order

Natural materials vary from piece to piece, so the exact item, its specifications, any treatment, certification details, price and delivery time are confirmed with you before the order is accepted.

Questions customers ask

How can I avoid glass-filled rubies?

A recognised laboratory report states whether a ruby is heated, untreated or glass-filled. We confirm the treatment before you order.

Responsible guidance

Spiritual and astrological associations belong to tradition and personal belief. They are not medical treatment and do not promise any financial, health or relationship outcome. For gemstone identification, rely on a report from a recognised laboratory.
