Hessonite Garnet (Gomed) — Loose Gemstone

Hessonite is an orange-brown variety of grossular garnet, rated about 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale. Its colour, like dark honey or cola, and the swirling "treacle" effect seen under magnification are characteristic. Sri Lanka and East Africa are important sources.

Tradition and meaning

Gomed is the ratna of Rahu, the shadow planet associated with ambition and sudden change. In Jyotish it is traditionally set in silver or panchdhatu and worn on the middle finger, first put on on a Saturday, after consultation.

How to choose

Look for a clear, rich honey colour without a muddy tone, good transparency and a well-proportioned cut. Hessonite is usually untreated, but confirm this, and ask for a laboratory report that matches the exact stone.

Care

Clean with lukewarm soapy water and a soft brush. Avoid knocks and sudden temperature changes, and store it apart from harder gems.
