Yellow Sapphire (Pukhraj) — Loose Gemstone

Yellow sapphire is a variety of corundum, one of the hardest natural gemstones at 9 on the Mohs scale, which makes it durable enough for daily wear. Colours range from soft lemon to rich golden yellow. Sri Lanka (Ceylon) is the most celebrated source, with fine stones also from Thailand, Madagascar and Australia.

Tradition and meaning

In Jyotish, Pukhraj is the ratna of Guru (Brihaspati), the planet of wisdom, prosperity and dharma. Traditionally it is set in gold and worn on the index finger, often first put on on a Thursday morning after prayers. Whether to wear it, and in what weight, is a personal decision usually made with an astrologer.

How to choose

Look for even colour, good transparency and a clean, lively cut. Heat treatment is common and accepted in the trade, but it must be disclosed, while untreated stones command a premium. Ask for a report from a recognised gemological laboratory that matches the exact stone, its weight and its measurements.

Care

Clean with lukewarm water, mild soap and a soft brush. Avoid ultrasonic or steam cleaning unless the stone is confirmed untreated, and store it separately to avoid scratching softer gems.

What we confirm before you order

Natural materials vary from piece to piece, so the exact item, its specifications, any treatment, certification details, price and delivery time are confirmed with you before the order is accepted.

Questions customers ask

Is Pukhraj the same as yellow topaz?

No. Pukhraj is yellow sapphire (corundum). Yellow topaz and citrine look similar but are different minerals and are sometimes sold as substitutes. A lab report confirms the identity.

What does "heated" mean on a report?

Many sapphires are heated to improve colour and clarity. It is a stable, widely accepted treatment, and it should always be disclosed.

Responsible guidance

Spiritual and astrological associations belong to tradition and personal belief. They are not medical treatment and do not promise any financial, health or relationship outcome. For gemstone identification, rely on a report from a recognised laboratory.
