Pearl (Moti) — Loose Pearl

Pearls are organic gems formed inside molluscs, prized for their lustre, the soft glow that seems to come from within. Natural pearls are extremely rare. Almost all pearls sold today are cultured, which is a legitimate pearl formed with human help, and this should always be disclosed. Pearls are soft, about 2.5 to 4.5 on the Mohs scale.

Tradition and meaning

Moti is the ratna of Chandra, associated with the mind, emotions and calm. It is traditionally set in silver and worn on the little finger, first put on on a Monday, often after an astrologer's advice.

How to choose

Judge lustre, surface cleanliness, shape (round is most valued) and size. Ask whether the pearl is natural or cultured, saltwater or freshwater, and whether it has been dyed or treated. A laboratory report can confirm natural origin.

Care

Pearls are delicate. Put them on after perfume and cosmetics, wipe them with a soft damp cloth after wearing, and store them separately in a soft pouch. Never use ultrasonic cleaners or chemicals.
