Blue sapphire is corundum coloured by traces of iron and titanium, rated 9 on the Mohs scale for excellent durability. The most prized stones show a velvety, evenly saturated blue. Sri Lanka, Madagascar and Myanmar are important sources today, while historic Kashmir sapphires remain legendary and rarely available.

Tradition and meaning

Neelam is the ratna of Shani, the planet of discipline, karma and perseverance. In Jyotish it is regarded as the most powerful of the gems, so it is traditionally worn only after careful consultation, often set in silver or white gold on the middle finger and first put on on a Saturday.

How to choose

Evaluate colour (avoid overly dark or greyish tones), clarity and cut. Heat treatment is common, while diffusion and glass filling must be disclosed and are valued very differently. Insist on a laboratory report that matches the exact stone, weight and measurements.
