Vara Mahalakshmi grants boons to her devotees. Kannada women observe this vrata for the prosperity, health and happiness of their families, and the day is filled with colour, music and hospitality, as married women are invited home and offered bagina.

When it is performed

It is observed on the Friday before Shravana Purnima, usually in August.

What the ceremony involves

The kalasha is decorated with the goddess's face, a saree and jewellery, and placed on a decorated mantapa. The priest guides the sankalpa, shodashopachara pooja and vrata katha, the sacred thread is tied, and sweets such as obbattu and payasa are offered. Bagina is given to married women.

Vara Mahalakshmi Pooja can be arranged at your home, or online with live participation where the ritual allows it. Priests who follow the Kannada tradition can be requested, and the chanting language and regional procedure are confirmed before the date is fixed.

Ceremonies that need the family present, such as a housewarming, wedding or samskara, are held in person, and relatives who live elsewhere can join by video.

Is samagri included?

The written plan lists every item the priest brings and anything your family needs to arrange, so there are no surprises on the day.
