Why devotees choose Upanayanam

Upanayanam marks the beginning of Vedic study. The boy receives the yajnopavitam (sacred thread) and is initiated into the Gayatri mantra by his father in the Brahmopadesam, accepting the discipline of daily sandhyavandanam. For many families it is the most significant samskara of childhood.

When it is performed

It is traditionally performed between the ages of seven and sixteen, often in Uttarayana or during spring, on a muhurta fixed from the boy's horoscope.

What the ceremony involves

The ceremony typically includes udakashanti, the first meal shared with the mother (matru bhojanam), the wearing of the sacred thread and the girdle of munja grass, the Brahmopadesam, and the boy's first bhiksha (alms) from his mother. Homam and blessings follow.

Formats and languages

Upanayanam can be arranged at your home, or online with live participation where the ritual allows it. Priests who follow the Kannada, Tamil and Telugu traditions can be requested, and the chanting language and regional procedure are confirmed before the date is fixed.

Can this pooja be done online?

For many poojas, homams and paths, yes: the priest performs the ritual with your sankalpa (names, gotra and intention) while you join by video. Ceremonies that need the family present, such as a housewarming, wedding or samskara, are held in person, and relatives who live elsewhere can join by video.

Is samagri included?

The written plan lists every item the priest brings and anything your family needs to arrange, so there are no surprises on the day.
