Why devotees choose Makar Sankranti Pooja

Makara Sankranti marks the Sun's entry into Capricorn and the beginning of Uttarayana, the auspicious northward journey of the Sun. In Karnataka families worship Surya, give thanks for the harvest and share ellu-bella (sesame, jaggery, coconut and groundnut), saying "ellu bella thindu olle maathaadi": eat sesame and jaggery and speak sweetly.

When it is performed

It falls on or around 14 January each year, when the Sun enters Makara rashi.

What the ceremony involves

The priest performs Ganapathi pooja and a sankalpa, followed by Surya pooja with arghya, the recitation of Aditya Hridaya or Surya mantras, and the offering of new harvest grains, sugarcane and ellu-bella. Tarpana for ancestors is also traditional on this day.

Formats and languages

Makar Sankranti Pooja can be arranged at your home, or online with live participation where the ritual allows it. Priests who follow the Kannada tradition can be requested, and the chanting language and regional procedure are confirmed before the date is fixed.

How booking works

Tell us the occasion, location and dates that suit your family. We match a priest who follows your tradition, confirm timings and materials, and send a written plan with the final price. You decide only when everything is clear.

Questions families ask

Can this pooja be done online?

For many poojas, homams and paths, yes: the priest performs the ritual with your sankalpa (names, gotra and intention) while you join by video. Ceremonies that need the family present, such as a housewarming, wedding or samskara, are held in person, and relatives who live elsewhere can join by video.

Is samagri included?

The written plan lists every item the priest brings and anything your family needs to arrange, so there are no surprises on the day.

A note on faith and expectations

Every ceremony is offered as an act of devotion. Results in health, wealth, relationships or legal matters cannot be promised, and professional advice should always be sought where it is needed.
