Why devotees choose Avani Avittam – Upakarma
Avani Avittam, or Upakarma, is the annual day on which those who wear the yajnopavitam change the sacred thread and renew their commitment to Vedic study. It includes prayers of atonement and gratitude to the rishis who preserved the Vedas. Online participation helps families outside India keep the observance alive.
When it is performed
For Yajur Vedis it falls on the full moon of the Tamil month of Avani (Shravana). Rig and Sama Vedis observe it on other days. The following day is traditionally dedicated to Gayatri japa.
What the ceremony involves
The priest guides the kamo karshit japa, maha sankalpam, the wearing of the new yajnopavitam, Kanda Rishi Tarpanam and Vedarambham, step by step on a live call. Participants keep a new thread, darbha grass, sesame seeds and a small set of materials ready, as listed in advance.
Formats and languages
Avani Avittam – Upakarma can be arranged online, with live participation arranged in advance. Priests who follow the Tamil tradition can be requested, and the chanting language and regional procedure are confirmed before the date is fixed.
How booking works
Planning starts with a short enquiry. Our team checks priest availability for your tradition and language, proposes a muhurta, shares a clear list of inclusions and samagri, and confirms the total. Nothing is booked or charged until you agree.
Questions families ask
Can this pooja be done online?
For many poojas, homams and paths, yes: the priest performs the ritual with your sankalpa (names, gotra and intention) while you join by video. Ceremonies that need the family present, such as a housewarming, wedding or samskara, are held in person, and relatives who live elsewhere can join by video.
Is samagri included?
The written plan lists every item the priest brings and anything your family needs to arrange, so there are no surprises on the day.
A note on faith and expectations
Pooja and homam are practised for devotion, gratitude and inner steadiness. They do not replace qualified professional advice, and no outcome is promised.
