Karungali Japa Mala — 108 Ebony Wood Beads

Karungali is the Tamil name for ebony, a dense, naturally black heartwood. The beads are turned and polished to a deep, smooth finish, and the mala carries 108 beads with a sumeru bead. Its weight and colour make it a distinctive, grounding mala.

Tradition and meaning

In Tamil tradition Karungali is associated with Lord Murugan and with Mangal (Sevvai), and it is believed to protect against negativity. Devotees wear Karungali malas and use them for japa, especially on Tuesdays.

Genuine ebony is heavy and naturally black throughout, not painted or dyed. Confirm the wood species and that the timber is lawfully sourced, along with the bead size and stringing quality.
