This mala has 108 beads turned from the wood of the Tulsi plant, with a larger sumeru (guru) bead marking the start and end of each round of chanting. Tulsi wood is light and smooth, and it develops a gentle patina with use.

Tulsi is revered as Vrinda Devi, beloved of Lord Vishnu, and Tulsi malas are central to Vaishnava devotion. Devotees use them for japa of the Hare Krishna maha mantra and Vishnu mantras, and many wear Tulsi kanthi beads around the neck.
