Surya, the king of the grahas, represents the soul, vitality, leadership, government and one's father. When the Sun is weak or afflicted in the horoscope, or during Surya dasha, the japam is performed to strengthen confidence, clarity and recognition. Many devotees also recite the Aditya Hridayam.

When it is performed

It is usually started on a Sunday at sunrise, during Surya hora, on Ratha Saptami or at the start of Surya dasha, as advised.

What the ceremony involves

Priests chant the Surya mantra a prescribed number of times, followed by a homam with arka samidh. Wheat, jaggery, a red or saffron cloth and copper are traditional items of dana.

Formats and languages

Surya Graha Japam can be arranged at your home, or online with live participation where the ritual allows it. Priests who follow the Telugu tradition can be requested, and the chanting language and regional procedure are confirmed before the date is fixed.

Can this pooja be done online?

For many poojas, homams and paths, yes: the priest performs the ritual with your sankalpa (names, gotra and intention) while you join by video. Ceremonies that need the family present, such as a housewarming, wedding or samskara, are held in person, and relatives who live elsewhere can join by video.

Is samagri included?

The written plan lists every item the priest brings and anything your family needs to arrange, so there are no surprises on the day.
